George Franklin Norris

March 28, 1942 — March 9, 2026

George F. Norris went to be with his Lord on March 9, 2026, in Latrobe Hospital surrounded by

his loving family. The son of George and Eleanor (Barron) Norris, he was born on March 28,

1942, in the former Ligonier Hospital.

George was a member of Ligonier Heritage Methodist Church, where he served as an usher,

attended Sunday school, and was well known for flipping pancakes at the church's Fort Ligonier

Days breakfast.

He graduated from Ligonier Valley High School in 1960, where he received the Outstanding

Senior Athlete Award, voted on by his coaches and teammates. He later earned a bachelor's

degree in Social Studies from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a master's equivalency

degree from Penn State University.

George devoted 36 years to the Ligonier Valley School District as a Social Studies teacher,

teaching World Cultures, Economics, and World History until his retirement. During his career

he also coached numerous sports including football, basketball, wrestling, girls softball, and

Little League baseball.

Some of his fondest coaching memories began with the 1970s football program under Coach

Jerry Blank, when the team experienced many successful seasons. He later returned to

coaching football in the 1980s as an assistant to Head Coach J.D. Jones. During that time the

team won Mountain Conference Championships in 1984 and 1985 and achieved a remarkable

24-game unbeaten streak with the 1984, 1985, and 1986 teams.

Wrestling was another passion, where he served as an assistant coach to Alan Ludwig. During

that time the wrestling program saw great success with championships, multiple state place

winners, and Ligonier's only state champion, John Chendy.

In his free time George enjoyed playing sports, listening to music, and spending time with

friends. His greatest joy, however, was his grandchildren. He loved taking them fishing, watching

them play sports, and following their many accomplishments with great pride.

George was blessed to have many kind and compassionate caregivers, including "Tanya,

Tanya, Tanya" and Nicole. The family sincerely thanks all the caregivers for their support.

Above all, George cherished the memories and relationships he formed with his many students,

athletes, and coworkers throughout the years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Norris, and

brothers-in-law Robert King and Jack King.

He is survived by his adoring wife of 59 years, June Norris; his loving children, Dr. George

(Rebecca) Norris of Chantilly, Virginia, and Amy (Robert) Stoner of Ligonier, Pennsylvania; his

beloved grandchildren, Trey (Emma) Stoner, Tyler Stoner and his significant other Maya Best,

Keara Norris and her significant other Joseph Mathews, Braden Norris, and Carter Norris; and

his brother-in-law, Richard King.
