Thomas L. Crawford, age 85 of Ligonier, PA peacefully passed away on October 2, 2023. He was born on August 15, 1938, in Kingsport, TN. Thomas led a remarkable life filled with honor and dedication. Son of the late Ace Harmon and Catherine Mabel (Galyon) Crawford.
Thomas made his career serving his country as a Senior Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy, then with the Federal Government, for an impressive span of 40 years. He had the privilege of serving in various theaters including the Pacific, Atlantic, and Mediterranean, and in the Vietnam War, before ultimately being assigned to Washington D.C. His unwavering commitment to his military service is a testament to his character.
Thomas was born with an inquisitive nature and a love of learning. He was a rabid reader, often having three books going at once, with a stack waiting to be read. He read about science, nature, history, mystery, and spy novels. He enjoyed sitting outside with his family at the bonfire, staring at the stars and wondering aloud about the nature of life and the stars, and are we alone in the universe. He loved traveling around the country, visiting and learning about new places. He preferred being outside on a sunny day, working in the yard or tinkering with the car, or getting involved with a new project. He had a fun side that loved going to amusement parks and riding roller coasters, even if they scared him. He was jokingly called “Grumpy” by his family (as in the Snow White and the Seven Dwarves), and he played along. He acted grumpy on the outside, but had a fun inner child also.
Thomas leaves behind a loving family who will forever hold fond memories close to their hearts. He will be deeply missed by his wife Veronica (Vargulish) Crawford, daughter Veronica Susanne (Michael) Leigh, stepdaughter Carol Wolfe and her late husband Jack, stepson John (Misun) Hutchinson, and David (Martha) Hutchinson. Thomas was a caring grandfather to Alexandra Leigh-Cairn, Caitrin Leigh, Jack Wolfe, Jay Wolfe, Tyler Hutchinson, Rachel Russo, Terry Hutchinson, and the late Maureen Hutchinson. He was also a cherished brother to Ace (Junior) Crawford, Mary (Bill) Shaffer, and was preceded in death by his brother James Crawford and sister Bobby Gooch. Thomas's legacy extends further as he became a great grandfather to numerous wonderful individuals.
The life of Thomas L. Crawford will be celebrated during two services to honor his memory.
